Lazzaretti about the first cardiac operation performed at the Salam Center for Cardiac Surgery in Karthoum, has been shown at the International Film Festival in Venice.</font></p> <p>The establishment of Emergency International will be discussed during the ususal annual gathering of Emergency volunteers in Orvieto, Italy.</p> </font></font> <h2><span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 20px; color: rgb(216, 46, 57); line-height: 110%; font-family: Georgia;">Emergency, USA News</span></h2> <p><font size="2"><font size="3"><strong>A Nurses Delegation from Chicago visit the E-project in Leon, Nicaragua</strong></font></font></p> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">On August 19<sup>th</sup>, 2007, Gerri Gorman returned from a 2 week stay in Nicargua. She traveled there with Marilou Carrera, an advanced practice graduate student in the College of Nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago where Gerri is on faculty. They arrived in Managua and were met by Fabrizio Fasano, the Program Director for Emergency’s fledgling Women and Infant Health Center in Leon. Together with his colleague Emiliano, Fabrizio showed them  around Leon and introduced them to staff in the one public hospital in Leon and to faculty in the Medical School at the University. They also brought us to the site of the proposed Center and shared with us their design for the hospital and grounds.<font size="2"> <br /> </font></div> <div style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"> <p><font size="2">In Gerri's own words:</font></p> <p><font size="2"><<Although we tried to educate ourselves for what we would encounter (we knew, for example, that Nicaragua is the most impoverished in Central American countries, with the highest infant mortality rate and lowest average age for a first delivery) nothing can adequately prepare those of us from prosperous and wasteful cultures for what it means to provide health care amidst such prevalent and unremitting poverty. Conditions on the maternity ward were stunning: laboring and post-partum women lay on gurneys without linens, sometimes two women to one bed; pain medication is a rare luxury; little ventilation stirred the stifling air and cracks in the walls were taped with plastic covering.</font></p> <p><font size="2">A single nurse routinely cares for up to 30 patients. Discarded and broken medical equipment litter gangways and rooftops. Following the last presidential election, even therapeutic abortions to save the life of the mother were outlawed. An Emergency  representative presented at the UIC Pediatric Grand Round. What is new in Pittsburgh?

We are exhibit booth #63. Numerous high school students from at least three distinct high Schools will help "man" the booth which will be open to the public on the afternoons of Saturday Aug. 18 and Sunday Aug.19. Hundreds of festival visitors will have an opportunity to become familiar with the diverse humanitarian programs that Emergency runs in 7 countries : Afghanistan, Cambodia, Iraq, Nicaragua, Sierra Leone, Srilanka , Sudan . Information tools , buttons, books, T- shirts will be available for both awareness and fund raising purposes. AC</p>

Emergency reopens third surgical center in Afghanistan

<p><br /> After a temporary pull out due to intimidations inflicted on its humanitarian operators finally cleared of any wrongdoing, Emergency has gradually resumed its operations in Afghanistan.<br /> <br /> The hospital in Lashkar-gah - in the embattled Helmand Province- has been the last to be reopened , just a few days ago.<br /> The first 3 patients were : a man shot in Grishk three days before,<br /> a man wounded during a bombing and another one wounded by a mine<br /> explosion.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, in the maternity center, in Anabah, in the Panjisher Valley, the first baby after reopening the hospital was born on July the 24th. <p><br /> Hi, it is time that we resume communications, because we have something to say .<br /> <br /> ---On May 3rd a delegation from Emergency, USA participated to the inauguration of the Salam Center for Cardiac Surgery in Khartoum. The first patient , Sunia, a 14 years girl from the refugee camp in Mayo, was operated for a heart valve replacement. Since then, patients from several neighbouring African countries are already crowding the wards of the Salam center.<br /> <br /> ---Many people rejoyced both in Afghanistan and in Italy when Rahmatullah Hanefi , the humanitarian operator who helped in the negotiations for the liberation of kidnapped journalist Mastrogiacomo, was released on June 19 and fully acquitted after about three months of arrest without charges. Emergency has gradually resumed its medical and surgical activities in most of its facilities in Afghanistan.<br /> <br /> <br /> ---We have engaged an IT professional who is familiar with Non profit organizations needs, to develop Emergency, USA 's INTRANET. That would greatly help us to stay connected, communicate, share best practices and more<br /> <br /> ---The Chicago group of volunteers has been particularly active during the month of July with conferences , presentations and GrandRounds promoting the work of Emergency at Loyola center for Women, UIC and Heartland Cafe'.<br /> <br /> --- A delegation from University of Illinois at Chicago School of Nursing will visit Nicaragua in August<br /> The delegates will meet with Emergency personnel in Leon -already there supervising the construction site- and prepare a needs assessment to sustain grant applications and fundraising back in the US.<br /> <br /> --- The Pittsburgh group of volunteers has set up a Emergency booth at the 1st Greater Pittsburgh DiversCITY Festival on the theme "Emergency - A diverse support to civilians war victims , around the world"<br /> <br /> --- A delegation from Chicago, Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, will participate to Emergency's National Volunteer gathering in Orvieto, Italy , mid September.<br /> <br /> --- PLans are under way to organize an "Emergency day" in any city where we have a presence around October 27. It will be a day of awarenees, fundraising and dialogue about Emergency's humanitarian activities around the world.
